Steering rack noise over bumps

Jun 13, 2006 · I have the same problem. Going over bumps you can hear a dull thunk. My brother has the exact same set up as me sans ball joints. I've tightened my MM caster/camber plates, put on Steeda X2 ball joints and replaced my rack bushing with MM urethane ones. The clunk/thud is still there and my bump steer is horrendous. It usually consists of the pump, usually driven by a belt on the front of your motor, the rack or steering gear, tie rods to connect the rack or steering gear to the knuckles where your wheels are attached, and hoses or hard lines to connect the pump to the gear or rack. Over time, some of the seals that contain the power steering fluid can ... When turning or going over speed bumps, bumps or uneven terrain, or even doing a sudden stop i get this pop/ clunk from the front end. I have replaced the steering rack bushings, ball joints and tie-rods. still having same problem. hello,yes I also have noise at the dash and under car.The dealer has yet to resolve,I believe but yet to concur is the p/s lines both metal and the hoses need to be secured properly, the bracket at the subframe is insufficient.Also the coupling from the steering rack to the colunm seems a bit soft for the appilcation,(inherant desgin deffect ... Noises, bumps, and steering wheel vibrations are also minimized by your car’s suspension. Different suspension problems happen in the long run. These problems are quite hard to detect, but they are easy to resolve once discovered. Steering rack and pinion was leaking. Rack and pinion changed and got a suspension alignment. Every suspension component in the front along with the brakes have been changed and still have this knocking/popping noise when I drive over road markers or uneven road. This is not a clunk noise. I love the way the truck steers, however, when I go over bumps the steering/wheels are loose and jump. I feel like the truck wants to do a lane change every time I hit a pot hole. However, their theory is the bad tie rod end transfers the noise up to the steering wheel....it looks like the only way to convince them (that the steering wheel motor is broken) is to let them change the perfectly fine tie rod end. Thanks Missionz. If end up going that way I will check out the GT500 rack. I know everything I have replaced trying to cure the noise has not worked, but has helped handling, like the GT500 LCA's. I will check on the 500 rack and pinion unit....god I hate throwing money at mystery problems... One way to try and find noises in steering, is to grab onto steering gear parts while turning the wheel, or in other cases bouncing the car. Tie rod ends, upper strut bearings, ball joints and the juncture of the steering shaft and rack are good places to start. Just be careful not to get munched by moving parts. Since the bushings are worn, moving the steering back and forth rocks the steering rack on its mounts which will create a clunk noise. Not really sure which one I should start with. I've seen people getting new steering racks over this ... for now it seems that's totally overkill.

It is a popping noise from the front end. I know that GM (I am a GM mechanic) has issues with the steering shafts making the same noise. Now when I turn the wheel I can hear the noise and it sounds like it is coming from the steering shaft. Occurs over bumps, but oddly enough, not over every bump. At first the noise came from the right front, then the left front also starting making a similar noise. The car has an A-spec kit in it so brand new tie-rods as well as brand new struts and springs. I have a 3.5 with the same noise.Brought the car in last week and my mechnic told me I needed all tire rods replaced and 2 torsion bars also replaced.So i asked him will the noise go away and he said yes.Guess what the noise is back a week later and $500 short in my pocket.Going to bring the car back after the snow ends.Just snowed in NY.I will give a update once I talk to him.I just hope they ... the reason I ask is my car has been making the knocking noise when driven over bumps or uneven roads, but I dont feel any changes or oddity to the handling. Mar 16, 2013 · My front end would squeak over small bumps also and I could not figure out what the noise was, so one part at a time I took some silicone spray and soaked it. Eventually I found out that my squeak is the upper shock mount and instead of replace it I just spray it with silicone every couple weeks and shuts it up. After my lift a few months back it started the same exact clunking. I have replaced lbj's, tie rod ends, sway bar bushings and endlinks, steering rack bushings and the clunk is still there when I hit large bumps and is very annoying whenever I head off-road. There is a knocking or rattling noise. I'm still under warranty for the next 2k miles, but good luck finding a dealership here in Korea, so I ordered the spring for the steering rack per the service bulletin 04-17-17R and will install that myself when it gets here. I'm hoping that fixes the noise.
